6.1 Given a scenario, troubleshoot deployment issues.
Deployments fail for predictable reasons. Check permissions, quotas, sizing and compatibility before assuming something exotic.
Causes
- Incompatibility
- Versions, instance types, OS images or APIs that do not work together.
- Misconfigurations
- Wrong settings in templates or consoles.
- Resource allocation
- Not enough CPU, memory, IPs or storage assigned.
- Permission issues
- The deploying identity lacks rights, producing access-denied errors.
- Oversubscription
- More virtual resources promised than physical capacity available, causing contention.
- Sizing issues
- Instances too small (performance) or too big (cost).
- Outdated component definitions
- Templates referencing old images, deprecated instance types or API versions.
- Deprecation of functionality
- A feature the deployment relies on has been removed by the provider.
Outages and limits
- Outages
- Provider or service disruptions; check the provider status page.
- Full
- A complete outage of a service or region.
- Partial
- Degraded service affecting some zones, features or customers.
- Resource limits
- Hard or soft caps that block creation of more resources.
- API throttling
- Too many API calls in a short time get rejected (HTTP 429); add backoff and retries.
- Service quotas
- Per-account limits (e.g. number of vCPUs or IPs); request increases in advance.
- Regional service availability
- Not every service or instance type exists in every region.
