1.10 Compare and contrast methods for optimizing workloads using cloud resources.
Optimisation means running the workload on the right compute, storage and network for its needs, and letting the platform do the heavy lifting.
Compute resources
- VM
- Full control and compatibility for traditional apps; pay while running.
- Container
- Lightweight, fast to start, dense packing; good for microservices.
- Serverless
- Runs only on demand, scales to zero; best for spiky or event-driven work.
Orchestration, workflow and network
- Orchestration
- Automating placement and scaling of workloads across resources.
- Workflow
- Coordinating multi-step processes (step functions, pipelines) so work runs in order and retries on failure.
- Latency
- Delay between request and response; reduce with nearby regions, edge and caching.
- Throughput
- How much data moves per second; size networks and instances to match.
Storage and managed services
- Input/output operations per second (IOPS)
- How many reads and writes storage can handle per second; key for databases.
- Throughput (storage)
- Data volume per second the storage can move; key for large sequential reads and writes.
- Managed services
- Offloading databases, queues or analytics to the provider for built-in scaling and less maintenance.
