1.1 Given a scenario, use the appropriate cloud service model.
The service model decides how much you manage and how much the provider manages, and therefore which security tasks are yours.
Cloud service models
- Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
- You rent virtual machines, storage and networks. You manage the OS, runtime, apps and data. Most control, most responsibility.
- Platform as a service (PaaS)
- The provider runs the OS and runtime; you deploy code and manage data and app settings. Faster delivery, less to patch.
- Software as a service (SaaS)
- Complete applications delivered over the internet (email, CRM). You manage users, configuration and data.
- Function as a service (FaaS)
- Serverless functions that run on events and bill per execution. You manage code, permissions and triggers; no servers to patch.
Shared responsibility model
- Shared responsibility model
- The provider secures the cloud (facilities, hardware, hypervisor, managed services); the customer secures what they put in it (identities, data, configuration, and anything they manage per the service model). Data and access are always the customer's.
