3.2 Given a scenario, configure appropriate scaling approaches.
Scaling matches capacity to demand. Choose what triggers scaling and whether to add more instances or bigger ones.
Approaches
- Triggered
- Scaling that happens automatically in response to a signal.
- Trending
- Scaling based on predicted demand from historical patterns.
- Load
- Scaling when a metric such as CPU or request count crosses a threshold.
- Event
- Scaling in response to an event, such as a queue filling up or a marketing launch.
- Scheduled
- Scaling at set times, e.g. adding capacity every weekday at 8 a.m.
- Manual
- An operator changes capacity by hand.
Types
- Horizontal
- Adding or removing instances (scale out/in). Best for stateless apps; improves resilience.
- Vertical
- Making an instance bigger or smaller (scale up/down). Simple, but has limits and often needs a restart.
