3.4 Given a scenario, manage the life cycle of cloud resources.
Every cloud resource should be patched while used, tested when changed and properly retired when no longer needed. Forgotten resources are a common breach path.
Patches and updates
- Patches
- Fixes for bugs and vulnerabilities; apply on a schedule based on severity.
- Updates
- New versions of software or services.
- Major
- Significant version changes that may break compatibility; plan and test carefully.
- Minor
- Small, backward-compatible improvements and fixes.
Testing and data
- Testing
- Validate patches and updates in non-production first.
- Data
- Plan for the data each resource holds through its life.
- Ephemeral
- Temporary data that disappears with the resource.
- Persistent
- Data that must survive and be handled at decommissioning.
Decommissioning
- Decommissioning
- Retiring resources: back up or delete data securely, remove access, DNS records and IPs.
- End of life
- The product is no longer sold or developed.
- End of support
- The vendor stops providing fixes; migrate before this date.
