1.9 Explain the importance of database concepts.
Databases hold the crown jewels. Choose the right type and decide who operates it, then secure access, encryption and backups.
Types
- Relational
- Tables with schemas, SQL and transactions (PostgreSQL, MySQL). Strong consistency for structured data.
- Non-relational
- Document, key-value, graph or wide-column stores (NoSQL) with flexible schemas and horizontal scale.
Deployment options
- Self-managed
- You install and run the database on VMs: full control, and you patch, back up and secure it.
- Provider-managed
- A managed database service handles patching, backups, replication and failover; you manage access, data and configuration.
