1.2 Explain concepts related to service availability.
Availability in the cloud comes from spreading workloads across failure domains and planning how fast you recover when they fail.
Resource availability
- Region
- A geographic area containing multiple data centres. Choose for latency, data residency and service availability.
- Availability zone
- Isolated data centres within a region with separate power and networking. Deploy across zones to survive a data-centre failure.
- Cloud bursting
- Running normally on-premises or in one environment and overflowing to the public cloud during demand peaks.
- Edge computing
- Processing close to users or devices to cut latency and bandwidth, e.g. CDN edge functions or IoT gateways.
- Availability monitoring
- Health checks, uptime probes and status alerts that detect outages quickly.
Disaster recovery (DR)
- Recovery time objective (RTO)
- Maximum acceptable downtime before service must be restored.
- Recovery point objective (RPO)
- Maximum acceptable data loss measured in time.
- Hot site
- Fully running duplicate environment; near-instant failover, highest cost.
- Warm site
- Partly provisioned environment; data and scaling needed before taking over.
- Cold site
- Space or account baseline only; slowest and cheapest.
Multicloud tenancy
- Multicloud tenancy
- Running across more than one cloud provider to reduce dependence on one, meet requirements or use best-fit services. Adds identity, networking and monitoring complexity.
