1.8 Summarize cost considerations related to cloud usage.
Cloud cost is a security and operations concern: runaway spend can come from attacks (cryptojacking) as well as waste.
Billing models
- Dedicated host
- A physical server reserved for you, for licensing or isolation requirements. Most expensive.
- Reserved resources
- Commit to capacity for one or three years in exchange for a large discount; best for steady workloads.
- Pay-as-you-go
- Pay per second or hour with no commitment; flexible, highest unit price.
- Spot instance
- Spare capacity at deep discounts that the provider can reclaim with short notice; for fault-tolerant batch jobs.
Cost management
- Resource metering
- Measuring consumption of compute, storage and network to bill and analyse usage.
- Tagging
- Labels on resources (owner, project, environment) for cost allocation, automation and finding orphaned resources.
- Rightsizing
- Matching instance size to actual usage to stop paying for idle capacity.
