2.3 Summarize aspects of cloud migration.
Migration is a project with technical, financial and compliance risks. Pick the strategy per application, not one for everything.
Migration types
- On-premises–to-cloud
- Moving workloads from your data centre to a cloud provider.
- Cloud-to–on-premises
- Repatriating workloads, often for cost, control or compliance.
- Cloud-to-cloud
- Moving between providers or accounts.
Resource allocation
- Resource allocation
- Planning the compute, storage, network and people needed during and after migration.
Considerations
- Storage
- Data volume, transfer method (online or physical appliances) and target storage type.
- Platform compatibility
- Whether OS versions, licences and dependencies work in the target.
- Compute
- Matching CPU, memory and GPU needs.
- Cost
- Migration effort, run costs, egress fees and licensing.
- Networking
- Connectivity, IP addressing, DNS and latency to remaining systems.
- Management overhead
- New tools, skills and processes to operate the target.
- Service availability
- Whether needed services and instance types exist in the target region.
- Vendor lock-in
- Proprietary services make future moves harder.
- Environmental
- Physical factors of the target or source site.
- Power and cooling
- Capacity limits when migrating to or from on-premises.
- Regulatory
- Laws on where data may live and how it is handled.
- Compliance
- Standards and contractual requirements that must remain met.
Application migration strategies
- Rehost
- "Lift and shift": move as-is to cloud VMs. Fastest, fewest benefits.
- Replatform
- "Lift and reshape": small changes such as moving to a managed database.
- Re-architect
- Redesign the app for cloud-native patterns; most effort, most benefit.
- Retain
- Keep the app where it is for now.
- Retire
- Switch the app off because it is no longer needed.
- Refactor
- Rewrite significant parts of the code to use cloud capabilities (often used interchangeably with re-architect).
