3.1 Given a scenario, use AI-enabled tools to facilitate security tasks.
AI is now built into the tools defenders use every day. Used well it speeds up analysis; used carelessly it leaks data or produces confident mistakes. Always check what data a tool sends and where.
Tools/applications
- Integrated development environment (IDE) plug-ins
- AI code assistants in the editor. Useful for secure-coding suggestions and explaining code; review suggestions, and check whether code is sent to an outside service.
- Browser plug-ins
- Extensions that summarise or analyse pages. They often read everything you view; vet permissions carefully.
- Command-line interface (CLI) plug-ins
- Terminal assistants that suggest or run commands. Require confirmation before execution and never give them production credentials by default.
- Chatbots
- Conversational assistants for questions, analysis and drafting. Follow policy on what data may be pasted in.
- Personal assistants
- AI with access to email, calendar and files. Powerful and high-risk: scope permissions tightly.
Use cases
- Signature matching
- AI helps write and tune detection signatures (YARA, Sigma) and match variants of known threats.
- Code quality and linting
- Spotting bugs, insecure patterns and style issues while code is written.
- Vulnerability analysis
- Explaining scanner findings, prioritising them and suggesting fixes.
- Automated penetration testing
- AI-assisted reconnaissance and test-case generation within authorised scope; human testers stay in charge.
- Anomaly detection
- Learning normal behaviour and flagging deviations in logs, network flows or user activity.
- Pattern recognition
- Finding recurring structures across large datasets, such as campaigns sharing infrastructure.
- Incident management
- Triage, enrichment, timeline building and drafting updates during incidents.
- Threat modeling
- Drafting data-flow diagrams and candidate threats from architecture descriptions for experts to review.
- Fraud detection
- Scoring transactions or sign-ups for fraud risk in real time.
- Translation
- Reading threat intelligence, phishing lures or forum posts in other languages.
- Summarization
- Condensing long reports, logs or threads into briefings.
